“Pull Out Now!” — Shock Proposal Urges Ghana to Abandon AFCON Qualifiers After Coaching Disaster

Football analyst Kojo Addae Mensah suggests Ghana consider withdrawing from the 2027 AFCON qualifiers as time runs out to appoint a new head coach before November.

Ghana’s campaign to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations has been thrown into chaos following a controversial proposal by football analyst Kojo Addae Mensah, who has urged authorities to consider withdrawing the team from the qualifying series altogether.

The call comes after head coach Carlos Queiroz was relieved of his duties, leaving the Ghana Football Association (GFA) racing against time to find a successor before their next competitive match.

The Black Stars are scheduled to face Somalia on November 11, 2026, leaving the federation with roughly six weeks to finalize an appointment and prepare the squad.

To lead the search for a new head coach, the GFA has constituted a five-member committee tasked with reviewing candidates and recommending a replacement.

Addae Mensah, however, questioned the practicality of hiring a new manager under tight timelines, highlighting potential budget constraints and contractual obstacles if the preferred candidate is currently employed elsewhere.

He emphasized that any incoming coach would likely arrive in late October, leaving them with less than a week on the training pitch before leading the squad into a crucial competitive match.

The analyst noted that Ghana's precarious standing in Group C further complicates matters, following consecutive defeats to Côte d'Ivoire and Gambia that left the Black Stars at the bottom of the table.

Given the looming fixture deadlines, financial commitments, and poor start to the qualifying campaign, Addae Mensah argued that stepping away from the tournament altogether could be a necessary measure.

The proposal is expected to spark intense debate among football administrators and supporters as the GFA weighs its options ahead of the upcoming international window.

For now, the focus remains on the five-member committee's search to determine whether a new head coach can be appointed in time to salvage Ghana's qualification chances.
