Mohammed Polo gives solution to save Black Stars after AFCON qualifier collapse

Ghanaian football legend Mohammed Polo has called for an internal technical overhaul to revive the Black Stars, dismissing demands for AFCON withdrawal as "senseless".

Former Black Stars winger and 1978 Africa Cup of Nations winner Mohammed Polo has called for an immediate re-evaluation of Ghana's technical strategy to rescue the national team's qualifying campaign.

Polo urged stakeholders to avoid drastic measures and instead address the squad's performance gaps through internal technical solutions.

"You've been beating some people before. They went back to the drawing board and found solutions. So, if they are now coming to beat you, you should go back to the drawing board and find solutions," Polo told CitiSports.

He emphasized that the current group of players requires specialized coaching to unlock their potential and raise performance standards.

"And the solution is within us. We have to find the solution within us. The quality of our players today is different from that of two years ago. It's different," he stated.

"We need a technical coach who can help them and add some value to what they have. You need coaches who can add value, who can add something to what the players have. Now, when the players come, they don't add anything, so it is only what the players already know that they are playing," Polo added.

The legend strongly rejected public calls urging the Ghana Football Association to pull the national team out of the continental qualifiers.

"I don't think [withdrawing from the qualifiers] is the right thing to do. No, that is not the right thing," he said. "But withdrawing from the competition is senseless. It doesn't make sense."

Ghana sits at the bottom of Group C without a point after suffering a 2-0 opening loss to Côte d'Ivoire and a 4-2 home defeat to The Gambia in Accra.

The back-to-back defeats led to the departure of former head coach Carlos Queiroz, leaving the Black Stars needing a victory against Somalia in November to keep their qualification hopes alive.
