You won’t believe the shocking bail terms set For Manhyia South MP

Manhyia South MP Nana Adjei Baffour Awuah has been granted a GH¢10 million bail by the High Court following his EOCO arrest.

In a dramatic legal showdown, the High Court has granted Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Adjei Baffour Awuah, bail set at GH¢10 million with two sureties. The high-profile ruling follows his recent arrest and interrogation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). Ruling on the application, the court held that the sitting MP does not pose a flight risk, though it ordered him to remain available to state investigators as inquiries proceed.

The legal battle saw fierce arguments between defense counsel Samuel Atta Akyea and Deputy Attorney-General Dr. Justice Srem-Sai. Atta Akyea pushed for self-recognisance bail, highlighting that the lawmaker voluntarily surrendered to EOCO on October 1 and fully cooperated during extensive interrogations and search operations. The defense firmly rejected claims that GH¢9.85 million was unlawfully dissipated, explaining that the funds stemmed from a legitimate commercial settlement and legal fees involving SIC Life Savings and Loans.

However, the prosecution pushed back against self-recognisance terms, arguing that previous attempts to secure the MP’s cooperation had hit roadblocks since February, culminating in a recent court-issued arrest warrant. After weighing both sides, the judge finalized the multi-million cedi bail condition, requiring two fellow parliamentarians to serve as sureties.

The high-stakes case forms a major part of an ongoing EOCO investigation into alleged criminal conspiracy, money laundering, financial loss, and tax offences tied to unauthorized financial transactions. With national attention firmly fixed on the proceedings, the court has directed Nana Baffour Awuah to reappear for his next hearings on October 26 and November 2.
