“We Shouldn’t Have Gone There!” — NPP Boss John Boadu Fires Back Over Party Leadership Rule Changes

Newly elected NPP Chairman John Boadu criticizes past constitutional changes, declaring that a national chairman does not need to be the automatic leader of the party.

Newly elected National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has declared that holding the post of national chairman should not automatically make an individual the leader of the party.

His comments follow the party's recent decision to approve a constitutional amendment designating the presidential candidate—or the sitting President—as the official party leader.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM's Dwaso Nsem program, Mr. Boadu emphasized that elected national officers are simply servants entrusted with serving the general membership.

He noted that who holds ultimate political control should not be the primary concern of party leadership.

"Who is in charge doesn't really matter," Mr. Boadu stated. "We're all servants who have been elected to come and serve."

The NPP chairman argued that the party's original organizational structures had served its interests effectively since 1992, questioning the rationale behind recent attempts to alter leadership rules.

He recalled raising concerns during past internal discussions at Legon, though he lacked the necessary votes at the time to block the previous changes.

Citing a well-known administrative principle, Mr. Boadu pointed out that functional systems should not be altered unnecessarily.

"Americans always say that if a system is not broken, we don't fix it," he remarked.

"So that thing about making the chairman a leader just because of one person, I felt it was unnecessary, and we shouldn't have gone there."

He maintained that executive performance remains the true measure of effective leadership rather than formal titles.

"A good chairman doesn't need to be a leader of the party, and a bad chairman doesn't deserve to be a leader of the party," he stated.

Concluding his remarks, Mr. Boadu emphasized that his focus remains entirely on fulfilling his mandate to rebuild the party machinery.
