Unprecedented Shake-Up: Inside the 14 massive reforms approved at the wild NPP conference

The New Patriotic Party has officially passed 14 major constitutional amendments in Kumasi, completely restructuring party leadership, campaign roles, and voting rights.

Delegates at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Delegates Conference in Kumasi have officially voted to adopt 14 sweeping amendments to the party’s constitution. Presented by the Constitutional Amendments Committee, the far-reaching reforms aim to overhaul administrative operations, streamline campaign structures, and bolster overall party preparedness ahead of upcoming national elections.

The 14 approved constitutional amendments:

Expanded Disciplinary Committee: Articles 4(17)(c) and 16(9) now increase the National Council of Elders' representation on the National Disciplinary Committee from one to two members to enhance institutional wisdom and fairness.

Additional Constituency Vice Chairperson: Article 7(2) adds an extra Constituency Vice Chairperson to broaden executive leadership and streamline local administration.

IT Officers on Executive Committees: Articles 7(2) and 9(1) officially incorporate Regional and Constituency IT Officers into executive committees to strengthen digital coordination and data security.

Deputy Communications Officers: Created elected Deputy Regional and Constituency Communications Officer positions on executive committees to support expanding media outreach.

Additional Regional Vice Chairpersons: Added two new Regional Vice Chairpersons to improve regional mobilization and administrative workload distribution.

Voting Rights for Regional Elders: Article 10(13) grants Chairpersons of Regional Councils of Elders official voting rights at the National Delegates Conference.

Voting Rights for Regional Patrons: Article 10(13) extends voting rights at the National Delegates Conference to Chairpersons of Regional Patrons in recognition of their key contributions.

Official Administrative Manual: Article 10(2) mandates the National Council to publish a comprehensive manual detailing precise duties for all elected and non-elected officers.

Presidential Campaign Control: Articles 10(3), 10(3)(2), and 10(4)(2) grant the elected presidential candidate direct control to design campaign structures and appoint campaign advisory committees.

Clear Leadership Hierarchy: Articles 10(41) and 13 clarify that the elected presidential candidate—or the sitting President when in power—serves as the undisputed party leader.

Six National Vice Chairpersons: Article 10(5) expands the executive roster to six National Vice Chairpersons (three elected, three appointed), with appointed members excluded from presidential succession.

Separate Vice Chair Elections: Article 10(5) establishes independent ballots for First, Second, and Third Vice Chairpersons rather than a single pooled contest.

President on Steering Committee: Article 10(10)(2) reinstates a sitting President as an active member of the National Steering Committee to align government and party policies.

Gender Equity Mandate: Article 15(12) tasks the Women’s Wing with actively driving female political participation under the Affirmative Action Act of 2024.
