SSNIT defends La Beach demolition, cites reasons for their actions

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has broken its silence to defend the sudden demolition of structures along La Beach in Accra, saying it explicitly requested military and police intervention to safeguard major hotel assets.

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has broken its silence to defend the sudden demolition of structures along the La Beach area in Accra, revealing that it explicitly requested military and police intervention to safeguard major hotel assets.

The joint operation—executed by the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces alongside the Ghana Police Service—saw armed personnel clear unauthorized vendors, squatters, and businesses operating at La Pleasure Beach and the Polo Beach Club.

Addressing public backlash over the exercise, SSNIT explained that the targeted beachfronts directly adjoin the Labadi Beach Hotel and La Palm Royal Beach Hotel, both key hospitality investments owned by Ghanaian workers. The Trust emphasized its legal and fiduciary responsibility to protect these national assets, stating:

"These assets belong to the workers and pensioners of Ghana. In view of the foregoing, SSNIT requested support from National Security to protect the assets belonging to Ghanaian workers."

According to SSNIT, unchecked encroachment on the shoreline presented severe security threats to hotel guests, heightened fire and public health hazards, and damaged the natural coastal ecosystem. The Trust reassured the public that it will thoroughly clean and restore the shoreline and keep it accessible to all visitors.
