SSNIT announces major plans to transform the cleared Labadi beachfront into a world-class tourism enclave, promising new jobs and community engagement.
The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has announced that the recent clearing of unauthorized structures along the beachfront adjoining Labadi Beach Hotel and La Palm Royal Beach Hotel marks the beginning of a major redevelopment project aimed at transforming the area into a properly planned, world-class tourism destination.
Addressing concerns surrounding local economic impacts, SSNIT clarified the vision behind the initiative. "Creating a better organized tourism environment is not simply about taking away people's livelihoods. It is about creating an enclave that can generate more sustainable and wider economic opportunities for the surrounding community," the Trust stated.
SSNIT outlined plans to directly benefit residents, confirming that young people from Labadi and neighboring communities will receive priority consideration for employment opportunities arising from both the development phase and subsequent operations, subject to standard recruitment requirements. The Trust noted, "The redevelopment is expected to create opportunities in construction, hospitality, tourism, food services, entertainment, security, cleaning, maintenance, transportation and various related activities."
Emphasizing its fiduciary duty to protect worker funds, the Trust reminded the public that the properties form a critical part of its investment portfolio. "These assets belong to the workers and pensioners whose contributions form the foundation of the Scheme," SSNIT stated, reinforcing that its core responsibility is ensuring these resources are "properly protected, managed and developed" to generate sustainable financial returns.
To ensure smooth execution, SSNIT committed to maintaining open dialogue with chiefs, traditional authorities, community leaders, and local residents throughout the transformation process. The Trust emphasized, "The success of the redevelopment will depend, in part, on meaningful engagement with the people who live and work in the area."
Scheduled to begin this month, the redevelopment project will prioritize sanitation, security, accessibility, and environmental management. Reassuring beachgoers, SSNIT stressed, "The beachfront will remain a public beach," adding that "the ultimate objective is to transform the area into an asset that works better for Ghana — for visitors, the surrounding community, the tourism industry and, importantly, for members whose contributions underpin the Scheme."
