NPP delegates approve massive constitutional change at Kumasi national conference

NPP delegates in Kumasi have approved a major constitutional amendment making elected presidential candidates official party leaders.

Delegates at the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Delegates Conference in Kumasi have officially voted to approve a major amendment to the party’s constitution. The landmark decision alters the party's governance framework by establishing that an elected presidential candidate automatically assumes overall leadership of the party.

The critical change was passed through an oral vote during the conference held on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. Officially designated as Motion Number 10, the measure amends Articles 10, 4, 1, and 13 of the NPP constitution. Under the newly adopted provisions, whenever the party selects an elected presidential candidate, that flagbearer immediately becomes the recognized leader of the party.

To ensure structural clarity during alternating political cycles, delegates simultaneously passed a complementary provision governing periods when the NPP holds executive power. Under this secondary rule, the President of the Republic acts as the official party leader while the party is in government, maintaining that authority until a new presidential candidate is formally elected.

Party officials explained that the constitutional overhaul is designed to clearly define leadership hierarchy based on whether the party is actively serving in government or preparing for general elections with an elected presidential candidate. The vote represents a significant shift in internal party dynamics, streamlining operational authority and centralizing command under the flagbearer as the NPP prepares for future electoral contests.
