Local Government Minister Mahama Ayariga urges commercial banks to adopt, rename, and maintain major public streets in a public-private partnership drive.
Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has proposed renaming selected public streets to honor corporate partnerships with commercial banks in exchange for the financial institutions maintaining the roads.
Speaking during a high-level consultative meeting with executive heads of banks, Mr. Ayariga suggested that financial institutions could be assigned specific streets to adopt, upgrade, and maintain long-term.
He explained that the initiative would deepen collaboration between the government, the private sector, and local communities while transforming the aesthetic appeal of cities nationwide.
The proposal forms part of a broader appeal urging financial institutions to take an active role in beautifying and managing public infrastructure as part of their corporate social responsibility.
Mr. Ayariga stressed that banks possess the financial capacity, operational reach, and community influence needed to foster cleaner, greener, and more vibrant public spaces.
"I believe that banks have the resources, the reach, and the responsibility to help keep our public spaces clean, green, and welcoming," he stated.
The Minister clarified that participation would remain entirely voluntary rather than mandatory, reassuring banking executives that his ministry will establish a transparent, fair, and sustainable operational framework.
He noted that the long-term goal of the initiative is to cultivate a national culture where corporate entities and private citizens actively contribute to local infrastructure and development.
