President Mahama has directed the Local Government Ministry to establish a dedicated television station to broadcast local assembly activities.
President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs to establish a dedicated Local Government Television station.
The sector Minister, Mahama Ayariga, revealed the presidential directive during a meeting with key ministry stakeholders.
The new media platform aims to bring the daily operations, deliberations, and development projects of local assemblies directly to citizens across the country.
According to Ayariga, the directive stems from observations of limited public engagement and awareness surrounding local governance initiatives.
Modeled after Parliamentary Television, the proposed channel will broadcast local assembly meetings, town hall sessions, and district-level development projects.
The initiative is designed to enhance administrative transparency, foster civic participation, and hold Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) accountable.
Ayariga emphasized that spotlighting local governance through national television will help bridge the communication gap between district authorities and local communities.
The station will also highlight community development challenges, local cultural heritage, chieftaincy affairs, and religious harmony initiatives nationwide.
The Ministry has commenced preliminary planning stages to establish the necessary broadcasting infrastructure and secure required operational clearances.
Government officials expect the new television platform to deepen decentralization, promote public scrutiny, and drive inclusive local development across all sixteen regions.
