Kofi Bentil exposes hidden motives behind Baffour Awuah’s EOCO detention

MANI Vice-President Kofi Bentil has declared MP Baffour Awuah's arrest a political witch hunt, arguing that both NPP and NDC members recognize the case as politically driven.

Lawyer and IMANI Ghana Senior Vice-President, Kofi Bentil, has openly questioned the arrest of Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, asserting that politicians across all sides of the aisle privately view the move as a targeted political witch hunt.

Speaking on JoyNews' Newsfile on Saturday, October 3, 2026, Bentil dismissed claims that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is simply carrying out routine law enforcement. Highlighting widespread skepticism surrounding the state agency's actions, Bentil stated:

"There is nobody I have come across, both in NPP, NDC or otherwise, who is not convinced that this is a political witch hunt. Even the NDC people know that this one we are going after the guy."

Bentil further expressed confusion over the legal justification for the MP’s detention, questioning what criminal offense could possibly stem from a fee dispute. He argued that accusations concerning legal fees earned for recovering investments do not warrant harsh criminal charges like money laundering.

His remarks sparked a sharp clash on the show with fellow panelist and NDC communicator Theophelious Dzimegah Jnr, who maintained that EOCO acted within constitutional bounds under Article 14(3). The controversy continues to build after Baffour Awuah’s voluntary surrender on October 1, following a High Court warrant, with lead counsel Samuel Atta Akyea maintaining that the funds involved were entirely legitimate legal fees earned by the law firm.
