Ghana’s first standalone children’s referral center is officially operational—and major changes are happening immediately to transform local healthcare.
The Weija Children’s Specialist Hospital has officially commenced operations, offering outpatient and emergency services as a 120-bed specialized referral center, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has announced.
Speaking following a comprehensive inspection tour to evaluate the facility's operational readiness, the Minister expressed satisfaction with the progress made, confirming that nearly all required medical equipment has been successfully installed. The facility is currently upgrading its clinical operations to launch inpatient services, marking a major milestone in Ghana’s public healthcare delivery for children.
To ensure optimal service delivery and support the hospital’s expanding role, Mr. Akandoh issued an administrative directive for the immediate deployment of 40 additional health professionals, comprising 10 medical doctors along with 30 nurses and midwives. Highlighting the unique national significance of the center during his tour, the Health Minister stated:
"The hospital has about 120-bed capacity, and it’s now in operation. I came to see first-hand how the place is working, and so far, I am impressed with what I’ve seen. I have directed that with immediate effect, they should bring an additional 10 medical doctors and 30 nurses and midwives to beef up the health workforce. This is a referral centre, and I think it is the first of its kind as a stand-alone children’s referral centre."

The Minister further charged the hospital's management and clinical staff to uphold strict standards of patient care, empathy, and professional dignity. He reassured the public that outstanding contractual matters between the government and contractors are being actively resolved, reaffirming the Ministry of Health's commitment to achieving full operational status across all departments.
