Former Awutu Senya East MP Mavis Hawa Koomson has been elected as the NPP National Women’s Organiser after polling 783 votes in Kumasi.
Former Awutu Senya East Member of Parliament, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has secured a major political comeback.
She was officially elected as the National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The victory was announced at the party’s National Delegates Conference held on Saturday, October 3, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
Koomson delivered a strong performance at the polls, securing 783 votes to claim the leadership role.
She defeated her sole rival, Hajia Safia Mohammed, who polled 429 votes in the contest.
This election victory marks a significant new chapter for the veteran politician.
She has been a prominent figure in national politics and party structures for over a decade.
Koomson first entered Parliament in 2012 representing Awutu Senya East, holding the seat through the 2016 and 2020 elections.
During her time in government, she served as Minister for Special Development Initiatives.
She later served as Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development in the Akufo-Addo administration.
Her return to a national executive role follows her defeat in the 2024 parliamentary election to the NDC's Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor.
With her new mandate, Koomson will now lead and mobilize the party’s women’s wing across all sixteen regions.
The conference brought together 7,163 delegates from across the country to elect new national officers.
The Ashanti Region recorded the highest delegate turnout with 1,122 representatives, followed by Greater Accra with 773.
In the specialized voting categories, 1,275 delegates were eligible to vote in the Women’s Organiser race.
Meanwhile, 2,745 delegates voted in the Youth Organiser contest and 858 in the NASARA Organiser election.
