Former Attorney General reacts as MP spends two nights in EOCO custody

Former Attorney General Godfred Dame has condemned EOCO for detaining Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, calling it a politically motivated abuse of state power.

Former Attorney General and Minister for Justice Godfred Yeboah Dame has launched a fierce attack on law enforcement authorities, accusing the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), and his successor of abusing the state apparatus to target political rivals.

Reacting directly to the detention of Manhyia South MP and lawyer Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah—who turned himself in to EOCO on October 1 following a High Court arrest warrant—Dame condemned the prolonged holding of the lawmaker without bail as an unprecedented misuse of prosecutorial power. Questioning the legal basis of the investigation into financial loss, money laundering, and tax offenses involving legal fees, Dame noted:

"The deployment of state power to settle scores and punish political opponents is the lowest point of law enforcement. On what account does Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah spend two nights in EOCO custody without bail when being investigated for a transaction from which he earned legal fees of GH¢2.2 million?"

Contrasting the current administration's actions with previous high-profile political trials, Dame pointed out that former ministers and lawmakers, including Alhaji Collins Dauda, Cassiel Ato Forson, and Dr. Dominic Ayine, were all granted self-recognisance bail during state investigations without spending a single day in cell custody. He further charged investigative agencies with abandoning real economic threats like narcotics trafficking to chase political targets and suppress opposition voices.
