NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has condemned the demolition of La Pleasure Beach as "wanton" and "bizarre," promising a five-point plan to rebuild the beachfront economy and secure legal leases for affected vendors.
New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has spoken out against the recent demolition of structures at La Pleasure Beach, calling the exercise sad, painful, and bizarre.
In an official statement released on Saturday, October 3, 2026, from Kumasi, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the beach enclave as a crucial social, cultural, and economic landmark that supports thousands of youth livelihoods and hosts major international events like the Year of Return. Condemning the harsh manner in which the clearance was executed, Dr. Bawumia stated:
"It is sad that this very significant enclave has been demolished so wantonly. It is particularly painful and surprising that even movable assets, which the owners could have removed easily, were destroyed most bizarrely."
Outlining a five-point recovery plan for affected business owners and residents, Dr. Bawumia promised to rebuild the beach economy by issuing formal leases, redesigning the area to modern standards, and ensuring smaller local vendors coexist harmoniously alongside major establishments like Labadi Beach Hotel. He also committed to resolving land disputes with LABOMA Beach operators and tackling underlying drainage and environmental challenges facing the lagoon.
