CPP General Secretary Kwame Nkrumah Botsio urges government to sign a legally binding MOU with striking teacher unions to guarantee promised reforms.
The General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Kwame Nkrumah Botsio, has called for a legally binding agreement between the government and striking teacher unions to permanently resolve the ongoing nationwide industrial action.
Speaking during an interview on the JoyNews AM Show on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, Mr. Botsio emphasized that while teachers play an indispensable role in shaping the nation's youth, they have historically lacked the support and compensation their service warrants.
He argued that enhancing teacher salaries and workplace conditions ought to be prioritized within the national development strategy given the foundational role of education.
While expressing deep solidarity with the striking educators, the CPP General Secretary appealed to union leaders to consider assurances provided by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu as talks progress.
However, Mr. Botsio stressed that verbal commitments from state officials are no longer sufficient and must be backed by enforceable legal documentation.
He explicitly urged the Education Minister to translate all negotiation promises into a formal, legally binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
According to the CPP scribe, a formal agreement would offer teachers the necessary confidence that government promises will be honored while establishing a clear framework for mutual accountability.
Mr. Botsio expressed optimism that once outstanding grievances are addressed and captured in writing, educators will promptly resume their duties in classrooms nationwide.
He concluded by calling for a fundamental shift in national policy to place teachers at the forefront of Ghana's long-term development plans.
