Bunkpurugu Residents Demand Probe After Alleged Military Brutality During Curfew

Bunkpurugu residents call on government to investigate military personnel enforcing curfew over alleged home invasions, physical assaults, and property damage.

Residents of Bunkpurugu in the North East Region are calling on the government and relevant authorities to launch an immediate investigation into alleged assaults by military personnel enforcing a local curfew.

The affected residents are demanding justice for victims and urging state authorities to intervene to prevent further abuses during security operations connected to an ongoing chieftaincy dispute.

Several community members reportedly sustained injuries during the military operations, with at least four victims currently receiving emergency medical treatment at the Bunkpurugu Hospital.

Community members allege that some soldiers exploited the curfew enforcement to break into private homes, assault occupants, and destroy personal property.

Victims and their families have recounted their experiences to local media, pleading for higher authorities to step in and hold the responsible personnel accountable.

One victim described how military officers forcibly gained entry into his home in the early hours of the morning, damaged the entrance, and inflicted physical injuries on his family.

"They came to our house around 3am. They have even destroyed my door. I am appealing to government to call them to order. My brother is injured, he cannot walk," the victim stated.

He added that security operations should focus on individuals actively breaking curfew laws in public spaces rather than targeting law-abiding citizens inside their homes.
